STEWARDSHIP REPORT
Fall 2011
download report here

Dear Friends,

With spring around the corner and its new beginning, we at the Michael Magro Foundation continue our commitment to our programs and services that have become the cornerstone of our mission. This spring also brings new fund raising activities. And so,  we strive to provide coordinated care between our services and the family’s community, including schools, physicians and hospitals.  Each and every day we continue to touch lives and bring comfort and care to children with cancer and their families.

Enhanced by collaborative relationships with Winthrop-University Hospital, its specialty pediatric practices, the Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK), and other pediatric cancer centers, our philanthropic endeavors continue to fund vital programs for our children and their families.  Investing in their health, dignity, and well-being continues to define our Foundation’s work and our ongoing crusade against pediatric cancer.

Approaches to care are often built on family strengths.  And the Foundation is dedicated to promoting hope among our parents with our Life’s Essentials Program which provides much-needed funds for food, transportation, and pharmacy needs. Our sharing with families on a continuing and supportive basis also extends to blood, clothing and toy drives, recognizing that the family is the constant in every child’s life.

The Foundation’s fundraising activities are blooming this spring!  On Wednesday, May 11th, we’re doing our first-ever Comedy Night.  You can read more about it, as well as review our 2011 calendar in the pages that follow.

On behalf of our executive board and advisory board, we thank you for your on going support and we are excited about 2011!

Sincerely,

Paul & Terrie

FOUNDATION NEWS

Sharing the mission of the Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop-University Hospital, and partnering with the Hospital’s pediatric specialty areas, the Michael Magro Foundation has awarded the Hospital a $25,000 grant to fund a software package for a state of the art portable echocardiogram machine. This cutting-edge equipment, manufactured by GE, helps assess cardiac anatomy with advanced technology and exceptional clarity. In addition, utilizing Automated Function Imaging , it can monitor the heart before, during and after chemotherapy, enabling physicians to establish a baseline for pediatric cancer patients, determine the effects of treatment both long and short-term, and evaluate potential cardiac damage.

Terrie and Paul Magro recently appeared on a radio show entitled ―Playing With Fire‖ as
a guest of Tom Schaudel‘s to promote awareness about the Foundation, in conjunction
with Paul‘s recently published ―Cooking, Dreaming and Dining, host Tom Schaudel , a
celebrity chef in his own right, praised the book and the Foundation‘s efforts on behalf
of children with cancer. This show airs every Saturday morning on WHLI 1100 AM
Radio from 10 -11 AM featuring culinary adventures and stories occurring on Long
Island.

The Foundation provided a ‘white board’ for the Center’s Library/ Conference Room to be used during educational sessions and rounds among CCFK clinical staff, physicians, and residents. The doctors and nurses especially appreciate having it for teaching purposes. Whether it’s the medical staff presenting to students and residents, or nurses offering standardized courses in administering chemotherapy, it’s definite enhancement to the Center’s remarkable accomplishments.

The Foundation purchased a variety of toys for Winthrop’s Pediatric Neurological practice sites in Commack and Bethpage, in addition to a 32 inch TV and DVD player for the Bethpage location. We also coordinated a toy drive with the Case Management Society of Long Island and contributed those treasures to Winthrop’s pediatric sites. And speaking of toys, kudos to Mary, who is keeping the tradition of The Joe Terino memorial toy drive alive. Toy donations went directly to the CCFK. Joseph DeSena and Associates also sponsored at their holiday party a toy and outer clothing drive. Gifts were transported to the Children’s Medical Center at the Hospital as well as to Winthrop Pediatric Associates.

Arts and crafts supplies continue to be donated to the CCFK on a regular basis. These are especially appreciated by children who cannot go to the play area and must stay in their treatment rooms. Any craft donations are graciously appreciated by the children of all ages in the acute care setting as well as outpatient pediatric centers.

Foundation Board member Joseph DeSena has announced that he plans to run a marathon in Italy this year to benefit the Foundation. Joe will be happy to sign you up, if you’d like to accompany him! Molto grazie!!

LIFE ESSENTIALS PROGRAM

The Foundation prides itself on helping families by funding vital CCFK psychosocial programs.  We relieve non-medical burdens and mitigate financial hardship among the Center’s patient population by providing essentials like petty cash for lunches and dinners, supermarket gift cards, pharmacy co-payments, and funds for transportation to and from chemotherapy.   Our Life Essentials Program distributes an estimated $2,500 in gift cards each month to needy patients and families.

The program’s impact, especially among the working poor with limited incomes, is immeasurable as the following stories will attest.

It was two days before Christmas, and one of the CCFK’s families was without heat. Working with the Center’s Social Worker, the Foundation intervened and provided funds to pay for an oil delivery.  When it was discovered that the father and son lacked suitable winter clothing, the Foundation made gift cards available so they could purchase coats, boots, hats and gloves.

The Foundation recently adopted a CCFK family – a patient, his parents and two siblings–in dire need of food and clothing.  The gift cards we donated ensured that the refrigerator was full and coats and other essential articles of clothing were provided for everyone.
